Custom smokings and evening wear

Smokings and evening wear in general is very much a luxury item. Whether you’ll use it for black-tie galas and other chic celebrations, or you want to dress them down, and wear them in a more relaxed fashion for less formal parties – evening wear is always tied to celebration. Here we invite you to take a look at a small selection of the types of the evening wear we can provide.

We are dedicated to your unique style and physique. Our custom smokings are made to reflect your individuality, both in terms of fit and design.

With advanced 3D bodyscanning technology and our proprietary algorithm SmartFit, we ensure an impeccable fit that seamlessly complements your body’s physique.

Black tie or modern iterations of smokings

The evening wear we offer ranges from very classic to more unorthodox and novel. The most classic example we showcase are the Black British Barathea Smoking ,  Maroon Barathea Smoking Jacket and the Midnight Blue Smoking Super S130’s. All of them are in classic colors and embody the clean and sharp elegance of a good smoking. If you’re curious about black tie we’ve made a full explainer article on the topic – All about Black-Tie.

The smoking however is not just a dark and formal garment. This can be seen in our White Linen Dinner Jacket and in our Olive Corduroy Dinner Jacket. What sets these jackets apart is that they  are made from less traditional fabrics, they generally have more structure to them. This makes for a somewhat less formal outfit, and a jacket that more easily can be combined with other garments, a pastel colored linen dinner jacket can easily be paired with casual attire for a seaside party. And the dark olive corduroy smoking could work very well with a nice pair of jeans and a turtleneck when going for cocktails.

All made in premium fabrics from natural fibers such as wool, silk and linen, meticulously sourced from the premium mills of Italy and the UK.

Premium craftsmanship has always been a focus to us, as well as our dedication to European productions. Our custom suits embody the essence of fine Italian tailoring, using a soft canvassed construction, a lightly padded shoulder and a high armhole as well as plenty of handmade details.
We offer full canvas construction as an upgrade, including a handmade Milanese buttonhole.

A note on accessories and styling options.

Styling a complete black tie outfit requires not only a quality custom smoking jacket, but also the appropriate accessories such as a smoking shirt, a cummerbund if worn without a waistcoat and, of course, a black bow tie. You can find all of this, as well as exquisite cufflinks and shirt studs, in our selection of accessories.

Many of the smokings on display show different styling options for evening wear. The most visible design choice is the type of lapel and whether the jacket is single or double breasted. The traditionally acceptable lapels are “peaked” or “shawl” and for darker colored fabrics the lapels can be satin (the black shiny fabric seen on the midnight blue smoking for example). Note that you are free to change all this when designing the garment.

FAQ

When do you use a smoking, and what is Black-Tie?

Smokings and evening wear are a festive type of suit used for celebrations and are usually only worn with a bow tie. The most common occasions where smokings are worn are weddings, galas and other parties where the dress code suggests a formal tone. However, it’s important to note that smokings don’t have to be very formal. Depending on how you design and later style your smoking, it can range from very formal to more relaxed. Fabrics with more texture and lighter colours make for a less formal jacket. There is one setting where a smoking generally feels out of place and that is at work; it is not a suit you would wear to the office.

Black tie is know as the semi-formal dress code and consists of a smoking jacket and trousers, as well as a smoking shirt, a black bow tie (hence the name) and either a black waistcoat of cummerbund. Most importantly Black tie refers to a black bow tie, never a regular black tie – yes it is confusing. Black tie is certainly the most formal and traditional way to style a smoking, and it looks really sharp, but again it is not the only way to style a smoking.

What colours are good for evening wear?

The most traditional colour for evening wear is black; clean, elegant and safe. However, as long as there has been smoking, there have been different colour variations. In all but one case, only the colour of the jacket changes. Let’s take a look at some stylish colour variations for evening wear:

Midnight blue – this is a shade of blue considerably darker than navy, so dark that it could be mistaken for black if not juxtaposed. If you choose a midnight blue jacket, the trousers should be the same colour – and this is the only occasion when the trousers wouldn’t be black.

Perhaps the best known departure from black is the smoking jacket in a shade of white, such as off-white, ivory or cream. It creates a visually fresh and crisp look that is particularly appropriate for summer.

Less well known but just as traditional are smoking jackets in other dark colours, such as burgundy or bottle green (but not navy). It feels a little more vibrant than the classic black smoking, but is still traditional and formal.

Modern ways of styling the smoking are in coarser fabrics, such as corduroy or linen, or in brighter colours, such as pastels. This is a way of styling smoking that requires a bit more character, but can be very stylish and original.

What is the difference between a smoking and a tuxedo?

Practically nothing, both refer to the dinner jacket. Smoking is used in Britain and continental Europe, while tuxedo is used in the USA. The word “smoking” comes from the satin smoking jackets worn by gentlemen in the cigar lounge, while tuxedo is the name of a park where the first dinner jacket was worn in the US.
